24th Annual Calema Midwinters Windsurfing Festival

Another "Midwinters Miracle" occurred with the 24th Calema Midwinters which was held March 5-8, 2009   Wind was light on both Friday and Saturday and only the Kona, Longboard and Sport Fleet managed to get races completed.  The forecast for Sunday did not look promising and many were afraid that this would be the first Midwinters to have a lack of wind.  Sunday morning came and the forecast looked accurate - very light breeze, but right around noon time, the wind picked up and allowed for 3 races to occur for the Pro and A Fleet Formula Racers!  They didn't even have a general recall on the first race - another miracle!  It was a memorable and wonderful weekend for all in attendance - SO put the 2010 event on your calendar -- It will be the 25th ANNIVERSARY of the Calema Midwinters Event - Don't miss it!  You never know how much longer Tinho and Susie can keep this all going!  Ha Ha!
Dates for 2010 are: March 4-7  --  Registration and Skipper's meeting for A Fleet on 4th - with Racing for A Fleet on 5-7th // Sport Fleet Racing is on 6th-7th only, but all are invited to come and enjoy the full event of fun starting on the 4th!

2009 Florida Windfest

 The 2009 Florida Windfest was April 18-19!  Another fun event - with about 25 participants with Formula, Hybrid and Kona class one-design racing - youth division, too! Winds were terrific on Saturday and a little lighter on Sunday but enough to allow racing throughout the weekend.  We all enjoyed Good food & good fun - the Florida Windfest.

Windsurfers Against Leukemia Full Moon Marathon

Our 2009 event had a smaller turnout this year - due to many scheduling conflicts for the junior participants, but they made up for the lack of bodies with a large amount of enthusiasm!.  The full moon in MAY was on Monday the 10th, so we held the event MAY 8-9!  Teams started at 4pm on Friday and sailed through the night until 4pm on Saturday!! 
Each windsurfer is part of a team. At least one member of the team must be on the water at all times for the full 24hrs.  Participation is limited - teams must raise a minimum of $600/team ($150/participant). Any interested parties (or teams) for future events contact susie@calema.com
Back in the late 80's Calema held 3 Leukemia Marathons - where sailors sailed through a full moon lit night to raise awareness and funds for the Leukemia Society of America. With our big growth in Juniors in the past few years, they heard about our event and asked for it to be revived. So, in June 2006 - we resurrected the Marathon!  Thanks to all the participating juniors for your help in raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Central FL!

11th Annual USA Junior Olympic Windsurfing Festival

OUR 11TH ANNUAL JUNIOR OLYMPICS - JUNE 27TH, 2009
We're looking forward to our 11th event! We will once again host a FREE learn to windsurf session for ages 8-17 from 9:30am-11am on Saturday, June 27th.  Space is limited so it is recommended that your register in advance. Check in will be at 9am at the shop. We will also have a FREE build a boat contest for any age with building from 10am-2pm. Racing of the mini-boats will be at 3pm down a PVC tube powered only by the wind.  
For those kids that already know how to windsurf - we'll have 3 divisions - novice (just learned this summer - will race on a course close to shore) / intermediate and advanced will race on a slightly larger course.  Cost for novice racers - $20 // Advanced Racers - entry fee is $20 - entry fee will include lunch, a goodie bags as well as some great racing!  We supply gear for the novice racers - just check with us ahead and Register Online!

Summer TEEN Windsurfing - French Immersion Program

For 2009 - NOPE -- another troubling year for France economics so no group this summer!
2005 & 2006 & 2007 & 2008 were cancelled but hopefully 2010 will bring another group for a summer stay!! In 2004 - Fourteen families shared hugs and tears as the group departed on July 25th. Many host families agreed that this group was really SUPER. With excursions to Wet & Wild / Wekiva Springs (we saw three alligators just right by our canoes), and Islands of Adventure - the French visiting students returned to France with memories of attractions, natural Florida and most importantly the warmth of their hosting families. If you'd like to be a part of the 2007 program, keep your calendars clear for July 3-30th. Women's Windsurfing Clinics

Our Women's Windsurfing Days are moving forward with the leadership of Christine Mulready.  2008 Women's Clinics (also called "Mom's Windsurfing" are scheduled - SUMMER DATES - Saturday, June 20th / Saturday, July 18th / Wednesday August 19th & Saturday, Aug. 22nd!    But don't forget - if you have a group of at least 4 women - we'll set a date just for your group - with lunch and all - so give us a call and come join our Windsurfing Women!!
Invite your non-windsurfing female friends to come and enjoy the day!   With an all female staff there to teach the basics to women of all ages - 18+, newer lightweight equipment and great weather, many ladies agree there has never been a better time to learn the sport.  Let us blow away the myth of windsurfing being difficult - gear is now lightweight and user-friendly. All you need is a bathing suit and a ready to learn attitude!!  Clinics start at 10am - you'll learn all the basics of windsurfing using a dry-land simulator, buoyed board then freesailing!  The instruction will be followed by a catered lunch!  All for only $125/person.
