Re: 24th Calema Midwinters and Kona North American Championships

Darren Rogers is once again the race director.
And Boe Marshal , instructor extraordinaire, is confirmed for the workshop fleet. From past years, the rave reviews from workshop fleet attendees make this event a special experience for those who have never raced, or have limited experience windsurfing out in the race course. the workshop fleet is run separately from the event's main race course, and all activities are run close to shore. If you have a spouse or significant other that you would like taking part in the event and want guaranteed a great experience, join Boe and the Workshop fleet!!!

New this year we will organize a SUP rodeo after racing.  It will emphasize handling skills over speed.

Re: 24th Calema Midwinters and Kona North American Championships

The weather forecast  is beginning to look promising. 2 days ago, looked light for the weekend, but that is now changing. According to one of my more trusted computer models, good wind Friday, and Saturday, may be Sunday as well. But by the way the model is changing, Sunday could turn windy, as a low pressure well to our west may be increasing the wind gradient.
For one, The High pressure that before looked pretty weak, is now showing as a stronger high, and further away from Florida, into the North Carolinas, which is the best possible scnario.
we will keep praying, but for one, it will bea warmer weekend. Today it was 15-20 knots and got quite cold. Tomorrow, Wednesday will be chilly with increasing winds, in the 18- 20 knot range.
Quite a few pros here already practicing.

Patrice Belbeoch of France is here, and shoing his brand new Honey comb Exocetsn - I tried the 78-- really nice board

Maui Sails is also showing a tour the force with many racers using the sails.
For me this is like Christmas, all the new toys arrive at once, and you get to see the worlds best using them.

The Space Coast is once again delivering the good weather, and the Banana River is such a great place for any level windsurfer to sail. Too bad the Space Shuttle has been delayed, it would have been nice to watch another Launch.
stay tuned for updates

Re: 24th Calema Midwinters and Kona North American Championships

Light winds were served for Firday, so the Kona and longboard divisions raced 3 races back to back. The Kona division was very competitive, with lots of juniors threatening the top spots. Dave Stanger and Patrice Belbeoch are the top guys in each sail size division. The forecast calls for light winds Saturday, but we may be getting a little seabreeze after lunch so keep your fingers crossed

Re: 24th Calema Midwinters and Kona North American Championships

09 Midwinters.... Sunday dawned and I looked at the computer screen showing me a high pressure directly over Florida, slightly to our west. Sinking air, no wind.
Was this going to be the Midwinters where formula racers would be skunked by the wind, confirming some loser's comments?
My usual optimism became a quiet resignation to the reality that alas, after 24 years we were getting a Midwinters with only light winds. I told myself, " Now, only with a miracle will we have wind today".

I got to kelly park to set up the course, the Banana River totally glassy. The course was set for a possible east Southeast breeze, if it ever came. The last possible race would be arount 3 pm. By 11:30 a ripple of the first wind showed in the distance, and the whole race committee quickly took their posts in anticipation of any possible wind, so any opportunity to race would not be wasted.

The breeze came up steadily, and the longboard/ hybrid class raced their last race, then the Kona North Americans fleet too the center stage for the last time. By this time there were 7- 9 knots all over the course.. The Kona Fleet was eating their lunch when the tower announced, " Formula Racers 15 minutes to your race!!!!  And instantly a loud cheer and roar from the Kona racers, showing their support and approval!!
I could not believe my eyes, whitecaps on the water and the whole formula fleet chomping at the bit in the water, you could feel the excitment.
This was the first miracle of the 09 Midwinters.  Soon after, as the start horn and the Formula racers rocketed out of the start line.
The second miracle took place: Without any time to lose to general recalls we needed desperately to have three races before the end of the day.
Any repeated general recalls would have put an end  at our chances of a three race series. But everyone behaved and we did get in 3 raes in full planing conditions, even with a general recaall.!!
So the fight for the Midwinters title went with Wilhem Shurmann, Jesper Vesterstrom, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel, Paulo dos Reis , all fighting for the top.
In the end Gonzalo took the win, showing consistency despite great speed from his rivals.
This Midwinters had a special flavor, The Kona  fleet showing great competition and fun, and the whole atmosphere was relaxed and fun even when the wind was light.
Thanks to all our sponsors and our volunteer team who made the event possible.
A special thanks do Race director Darren Rogers who rose to the occasion once again and did an awsome job keeping people on race course when it counted.
