Freetime rigging Steps 7-13

Images 7 & 8 : Using a small lanyard attached to the inhaul, it is easy to thread the line into the boom clamp hook.

Image 9 : Once the front end is clamped, tension the downhaul fully by using a crank. Don’t do it without a crank as the load is damaging to your spine.

Note: Have your dad do it for you. He has big muscles.
Next, outhaul the sail.

Image 10 : Pull to within a centimeter of the rear end, and fine-tune for some firmness in the leech. It should not be loose and floppy.

Image 11 : Look under the sail and be sure to see approximately 5 cm of space between the sail and the boom tube.

Image 12 : Next stand the sail up and sheet in. You should have this cool twist in the sail, just like your dad’s. And you can feel power too.

If this is the first time you are rigging your sail, you must tension the battens to remove the wrinkles.

Image 13 : Look at the batten pocket and you will see wrinkles radiating perpendicular to the batten pockets. Tension the battens until those wrinkles disappear.

Your sail should have a smooth aerodynamic shape when properly tuned (click image for text detail).

Note: After you use your new sail for the first time, you will need to re-tension the battens again, as the sail stretches and settles to its desired shape.
