GTR, Matrix, Charger, Pulse: Sail tuning guide by
Tinho Dornellas with Matt Pritchard

Tuning Raf and wave sails is done according to personal preferences, but the general guidelines apply.

Image 1 : Downhaul the sail so you have some looseness in the upper portion of the sail. However, you must retain a firm leech from the clew to at least batten #3

Image 2, 3 : Shows the view from the clew. If you are powered, increase the downhaul, which will increase the sail twist, and stabilizes the draft. When the sail is at rest, you can see the “scalloping” of the leech, between Batten #1 and #2.

Image 3 : Then outhaul the sail to retain the firm leech.

Image 4 : Check this firmness by pressing down in the clew area. You can check the proper downhaul also by looking at the leading edge of the battens, and the luff sock seam.

Image 6, 7 : Check the luff sock angle progression from boom area towards the top as it meets this seam.

Image 8 shows not enough downhaul.

Image 9 : With the pressure from the wind, the top batten “opens” and the scalloping wrinkles disappear.
